Key Checkpoints & Landmarks

The trail is organized into several “POS” (posts) that serve as rest areas:

  1. POS 1 & 2 (Tengengean, 1,500 m): A gentle walk through open savannas. POS 2 is a common lunch spot.
  2. POS 3 (Pada Balong, 1,800 m): The start of steeper inclines.
  3. Bukit Penyesalan (Hill of Regret): A series of seven hills between POS 3 and the crater rim, known for being physically taxing.
  4. Sembalun Crater Rim (Plawangan Sembalun, 2,639 m): The primary base camp for summit attempts, offering views of the summit, Segara Anak Lake, and the active Gunung Baru Jari.
  5. The Summit (3,726 m): A pre-dawn climb (starting around 2:00–3:00 AM) over loose volcanic scree and sand.

Popular trekking program from Sembalun Trekking route.

The most popular itinerary starting from the Sembalun trekking route is the 3-day, 2-night (3D2N) Classic Summit Program, which offers a full circuit of Mount Rinjani’s major highlights.

1. Most Popular: 3D2N Sembalun to Senaru

This “Classic” itinerary is favored because it allows trekkers to summit first when energy is highest, then relax at the lake and hot springs before descending through a different landscape.

  • Day 1. Sembalun Village to Crater Rim.  Trek 7–8 hours through open savanna. Camp at Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m) for sunset views.
  • Day 2. Summit & Lake. A 2:30 AM push to the Summit (3,726 m) for sunrise. Descend to the campsite for breakfast, then continue down to Segara Anak Lake. Relax in natural hot springs and camp by the lake.
  • Day 3. Lake to Senaru. Hike up to the Senaru Crater Rim, then descend through the lush tropical rainforest to finish at Senaru Village.

2. Shortest Summit Route: 2D1N Sembalun to Sembalun

Used by roughly 40% of trekkers, this is the fastest way to reach the peak but is physically demanding.

  • Day 1. Hike from Sembalun Village to the Crater Rim camp.
  • Day 2. Pre-dawn summit attempt, return to the rim for breakfast, and descend directly back to Sembalun Village.
  • Best for: Experienced hikers with high stamina and limited time.

3. The “New” Scenic Favorite: 3D2N Sembalun to Torean

Increasingly popular since 2021, this route replaces the final Senaru forest climb with a dramatic descent through the Torean Valley.

  • Day 1 and 2. Same as the classic route (Summit and Lake).
  • Day 3. Exit via the Torean trail, known for its “Jurassic Park” views, including deep valleys, rivers, and the Penimbungan Waterfall.
  • Best for: Those wanting the most scenic and adventurous descent without the extra uphill climb from the lake back to the rim.

4. Relaxed Pace: 4D3N Full Experience

Follows the Sembalun to Senaru (or Torean) route but adds an extra night at Segara Anak Lake.

Advantage: Provides a full day to rest, explore the lake, or fish after the strenuous summit day.

What’s the difference between Sembalun Trekking route and the Senaru trail?

Key Trail Characteristics

  • Sembalun Trekking Route. Because you start higher, you have a “head start” on elevation, making it the most efficient path for a 2-day summit trek. However, the lack of shade means you are exposed to heat and wind all day.
  • Senaru Trekking Route. This trail is often used as a descent route for longer treks (e.g., 3D2N Sembalun-Senaru) because the forest canopy provides a refreshing break from the sun. It offers the most iconic views of Segara Anak Lake directly from the Senaru Crater Rim.
  • Torean Trekking Route. Often mentioned as a third option, it is a dramatic valley route known for waterfalls and rivers but is considered more technically demanding due to its terrain.

Which one is the best, Sembalun trekking route or Senaru trekking route?

Neither is “better” overall; the “best” one depends entirely on whether your priority is reaching the highest peak or enjoying lush scenery.

Choose the Sembalun Trail if…

  • Your goal is the Summit. This is the most efficient route to 3,726m. Because you start at a higher elevation (1,150m), the climb to the first camp is technically easier on your lungs.
  • You like wide-open views. You’ll hike through vast, golden savannah grasslands that look like a movie set.
  • Downside. There is almost no shade. The sun will be intense, and the final “Bukit Penyesalan” (Regret Hill) is a steep, dusty slog.

Choose the Senaru Trail if…

  • You want the best Lake views. The panorama of Segara Anak from the Senaru Crater Rim is arguably the most iconic sight on the mountain.
  • You prefer the jungle. Most of the hike is under a tropical forest canopy, keeping you cool and protected from the sun.
  • Downside. You start much lower (601m), meaning you have to climb more total vertical meters just to reach the camp. It is a relentless, steep uphill from step one.
